UFC 291 with a third-round submission loss to Bobby Green on the main card at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City. Ferguson looked sharp in the opening minutes of the fight. He peppered Green with a few punches from the outside even scoring a knockdown at one point. However, an accidental eyepoke from Green halted some of that momentum.
Green started connecting after Ferguson was given time to recover in a round that was close.
Nurmagomedov. It all came crashing down for Ferguson at UFC 249 when the fifth Nurmagomedov bout was cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic. Ferguson cut weight for the event on March 18 2020, and then again for his replacement opponent Justin Gaethje on April 9.
Poirier vs. Gaethje 2 took place July 29 at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson (25-9) faced off against octagon veteran Bobby Green (30-14-1, 1 NC) on the night’s main card, which aired live on ESPN+ pay-per-view.
Ferguson (25-9 MMA, 15-7 UFC) remains winless since June 2019 following a third-round submission defeat to Green (30-15-1 MMA, 11-9-1 UFC) in their lightweight main card match at Delta Center in Salt Lake City.
At 39, questions about the future of “El Cucuy” once again surface after he promised victory in the fight.
The finish was Green’s first submission win since 2013, when he finished Jacob Volkmann with a rear-naked choke at UFC 156.
Ferguson’s losing streak extends to six, as he remains winless since 2019. The former TUF winner has dropped consecutive outings to Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, Beneil Dariush, Michael Chandler, Nate Diaz, and Green.
A loss to Green should bring up thoughts of retirement for the 39-year-old even if that's not where his head was at leading up to the fight. El Cucuy laid out his plan to fight five more times to earn a title shot before the loss.
