My American story began six years before I arrived in the United States. On a spring night in 1979, my grandparents fled Kabul, the city of my birth, in the aftermath of a Communist coup the previous year. My grandmother changed out of her everyday clothes and put on a chadaree, the Afghan burqa that envelops a woman’s body from head to toe. My grandfather, who normally dressed in khakis and button-down shirts, donned the loose-fitting trousers and shirts one sees Afghan men dressed in today.
