Afghanistan is a failure to learn the lessons of the past. When the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, we laughed at their folly, and we worked hard for almost a decade to raise the costs so high that they withdrew in the same ignominious failure as we are experiencing now. We learned nothing from the Soviet experience, or from what followed — namely the rise of Al Qaeda, helped in part by the assistance we provided to the Afghan mujahidin fighting the Soviets.
