What local democracy looks like in NYC ...Middle East

I live in Battery Park, and in late June, a real-life lesson in democracy paid a surprise visit to our community. It started when Gov. Cuomo appeared on television and unveiled his first-in-the-world Essential Workers Monument — to be completed by Labor Day. Where? Right in the middle of the busiest active green space in our lower Manhattan community. Why hadn’t our neighborhood heard about it? A quick internet search revealed the monument’s committee first met 60 days earlier, held no design competition, issued no reports and included none of our community members. As my 6-year-old says, “Not fair.”
