Zoya Romanenko was 16 when Russia entered World War II. She lived near Leningrad, where she survived the deadliest winter of the siege. She held her father in her hands when he died of starvation. Then her mother and grandmother passed away, too. Zoya Romanenko enrolled in the Red Cross program and later worked as a nurse in a field hospital. She was with the Red Army throughout the war and when Victory Day came, she was in Germany. If you are moved by her story, you can write her a letter for May 9.
