At a place where someone could buy a corn dog at nearly every corner, one dog stood out at the Greeley Stampede.
A bite into what appears to be a standard corn dog from the outside, shocks taste buds when met with smoked brisket.
The unique, hand-crafted option from Corndoggies, a food truck based out of Fort Collins in its 10th season of business, earned the Royal Taste Award from the Greeley Stampede’s annual Chuck Wagon Awards.

In addition to the Royal Taste Award, categories include Rookie of the Year, People’s Choice Award and the A+++ Award.
Rookie of the Year went to Cwillys, a new vendor based in Wiggins, for its great menu, popularity and clean workspace. The public chose Capone’s Concessions for the People’s Choice Award this year. Capone’s Concessions also won the People’s Taste Award in 2024.
The A+++ Award goes to a vendor who maintains high standards throughout the event in three areas of satisfaction: their space, their food and meeting deadlines. 2nd Gen Oompah Tacos took home the award at the Stampede for the second year in a row.
Royal Taste Winner
Although a newbie to the Stampede scene, Corndoggies stands out and hits the spot.
As a passionate chef, John Lawyer contemplated starting a food truck back in 2016. When the idea came about to sell corn dogs, he knew he wanted to put his own twist on the typically simple 100% beef item, often attributed to food for kids or carnival grub.
After extensive research, he found only about half a dozen corn dog food trucks exist, but not many make their own sausages.
With a mission to create his own batter, sauce and dogs in mind, he began crafting unique recipes to not only include the classic corn dog but also take the traditional concept of a corn dog a “modern” step further: making a corn dog out of anything, John said.
And that’s how Corndoggies came to be.
Today, alongside his wife, SJ, the food truck offers a variety of cuisines on a stick, like a pizza dog with pork and pepperoni sausage, mozzarella cheese and served with marinara sauce, a sweet pork breakfast sausage dipped in waffle batter served with coffee maple syrup or a jerk chicken option with Jamaican-style chicken sausage served with cilantro lime sauce.
Corndoggies is also dietary-restriction friendly, offering gluten and dairy-free batter and meatless dog options for vegetarian and vegan visitors, including a mac-and-cheese filled dog and a veggie dog with three bean variations and seasoning.
The dog that caught the attention of Greeley Stampede foodies was a “special-event only” smoked brisket corn dog, paired with the homemade honey mustard barbecue sauce.
“There are probably 20 other people serving corn dogs out here,” John said. “So, it means something … we take a lot of pride in what we do, and to get recognized in that format, it’s pretty nice.”

Stop for the food but stay for a photo opportunity with a face-in-hole wooden cutout of a corn dog or a sign that says, “Big wiener energy.”
The Lawyers reported Corndoggies made about 40,000 corn dogs last summer — equivalent to four miles in length of dogs. To increase the mileage of dogs sold out of the Corndoggies truck this year, people can swing by and give one of the many corn dogs a try in the final days of the Stampede.
