Leeds United have walked away from a deal to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin due to his wage demands, talkSPORT understands.
Calvert-Lewin has left Everton after the expiration of his contract and is now a free agent ahead of next season.
Calvert-Lewin is searching for a new club after his Everton departureGettyChampionship winners Leeds were interested in the 28-year-old and spoke to him in June regarding terms.
However, the striker wanted too much money to move to Elland Road, leaving Daniel Farke’s side with no choice but to no longer pursue a deal.
It is understood Calvert-Lewin is keen to join a club that will give him the opportunity to play European football.
The frontman could also be attracted to a Premier League club that isn’t likely to be threatened by relegation.
Calvert-Lewin joined Everton in 2016 from his boyhood club Sheffield United for a reported £1.5million fee.
Across 273 appearances in all competitions, he reached 71 goals and 22 assists for the Toffees.
He netted 16 goals in their 2020/21 league campaign and was named as the club’s Player of the Season.
Calvert-Lewin ranks third in Everton’s all-time Premier League scoring charts behind legend Duncan Ferguson and leader Romelu Lukaku.
One of his most important goals was the winner scored in Everton’s 3-2 comeback win against Crystal Palace to avoid relegation at the end of the 2021/22 season.
The forward announced his exit on Instagram last weekend, writing: “To Everton Football Club and the Evertonians.
Leeds were eyeing a move but didn’t want to meet his wage demandsGetty“After nine remarkable years at this club, I’ve made the incredibly difficult decision – together with my family – to begin a new chapter in my career.
“This isn’t something I chose lightly. Everton has been my home since I was 19-years-old. It’s the place that saw potential in me, challenged me to grow, and shaped me both as a footballer and as a man.
“I want to express my gratitude to all the managers and coaches I’ve worked with over the years, and to my teammates who have become lifelong friends.
“Above all, I want to speak to you, the fans. Your passion is the beating heart of this club. Whether times were good or tough, your unwavering support never faltered. Celebrating goals at Goodison Park, feeling that roar, is an experience I’ll carry with me forever.
“This choice to move on was not simply about me – it was a decision my family and I spent long time considering together. We believe it’s the right moment to seek a new challenge and continue growing, but that doesn’t lessen the bond I’ll always have with Everton.
“I’m deeply proud of what we’ve shared, fighting for this club when it mattered most, scoring big goals in crucial moments, wearing the shirt with commitment and pride. My hope is that I leave with your respect, knowing I always sought to uphold the values of this great club.
Calvert-Lewin is one of Everton’s greatest players in the Premier League eraGetty“Thank you for everything. From my very first day, I always knew what it meant to play for Everton. Up the Toffees. DCL.”
talkSPORT understands that Everton have reached an agreement in principle with Villarreal to sign Thierno Barry.
The striker has a £34m release clause, but David Moyes’ side have been able to negotiate a lower fixed payment of around £28m.
However, add-ons could take the deal to £35m in total, with Barry seen as a replacement for Calvert-Lewin.
