Max Verstappen has broken so many records in Formula 1 that he might not have noticed his unique results at the British Grand Prix.
The defending world champion has dominated the build-up to this weekend’s race at Silverstone following speculation over his future.
Verstappen being called a two-time British race winner carries an asteriskGettyThe four-time champion will now look to reset to focus on his efforts on track, with just two victories so far in the 2025 season.
That is as many times as he’s taken the chequered flag on British soil since his first senior outing in F1 exactly a decade ago.
However, when looking at the illustrious winners list of the British Grand Prix, Verstappen’s name only appears once.
That came during his dominant 2023 season, despite the Dutchman winning at Silverstone for the first time three years prior.
Why does Verstappen only have one win at the British GP?
The 27-year-old first took the chequered flag at Silverstone during the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix in August 2020.
The one-off circuit was in commemoration of the first F1 race, which was held at the same circuit in 1950.
It came just seven days after the 2020 British GP as part of a Silverstone double-header to complete the COVID-disrupted season.
And that ensured it was the first time since 1993 that the UK hosted two F1 races in the same season.
But for Verstappen, the race wasn’t under the British Grand Prix title, which means the 2020 entry is solely classified as Lewis Hamilton.
Instead, he had to wait until 2023 to join the history books after converting from pole to secure his second victory in Silverstone.
Last five British GP winners
2024 – Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)
2023 – Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
2022 – Carlos Sainz (Ferrari)
2021 – Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)
2020 – Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)
2019 – Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)
2018 – Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari)
Hamilton has been on the Silverstone podium for the past 10 years runningRed Bull, in fact, had not tasted victory under the banner of a British GP since 2012, with Hamilton and former team Mercedes dominant.
2023 aside, Verstappen has strangely struggled for a variety of reasons whenever he competes in a British Grand Prix.
He retired after just three laps of his 2015 debut for Torro Russo, having spun his car into the gravel.
Verstappen came a much more respectable second and fourth in his next two appearances, before retiring again with brake issues in 2018.
The F1 champion then came fifth the following year before another runner-up spot to Hamilton days before his first Silverstone win.
But once Silverstone became the site for the British Grand Prix again in 2021, Verstappen crashed out on lap one.
Verstappen has often had to play second fiddle while on Hamilton’s home turfGettyTo add insult to injury, Verstappen looked to end his horror run in 2022, having overtaken pole setter Carlos Sainz during the race.
However, he suffered car damage after driving over debris and could only manage to finish a lowly seventh.
Verstappen finally snapped his British Grand Prix unwanted streak in 2023, but he was only able to finish runner-up to Hamilton last year.
