For travelers heading to Colorado’s high country via Interstate 70 for a long holiday weekend, it might be best to delay your travel plans a little longer.
The interstate is closed in both directions at the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel due to a “significant” vehicle fire outside the tunnel, the Colorado Department of Transportation said Thursday afternoon about 2 p.m. Officials have not said if there are any injuries from the fire.
The closure will be in place for the next several hours as authorities investigate, the agency said without an estimated time of reopening the interstate, warning of extreme congestion.
Westbound traffic is being turned around at Beaver Brook, exit 247, to return to Denver, transportation officials said. Eastbound I-70 is open from Silverthorne, but heavy congestion should be expected.
“Holiday traffic is very heavy and travelers should expect extremely long delays,” officials said in a post on cotrip.org. “Travelers able to do so should wait out the closure in Denver.”
Colorado State Patrol is advising drivers to avoid traveling west on I-70 or south on U.S. 285 from Denver for the next several hours and is suggesting using U.S. 285 to Colorado 9 to navigate around the closure.
