Lewis Hamilton has insisted no one involved with the F1 movie has had any thoughts about a sequel despite its opening success.
The Brad Pitt film has already collected $160million at the box office and is accelerating towards paying for its huge $300m budget.
The F1 movie has so far been a hit among critics and the non-purist fansGettyReviews from those in F1 have criticised its storyline and authenticity, but film reviewers have been more impressed, comparing it favourably to director Joseph Kosinski’s previous success – Top Gun: Maverick.
Lead actor and Hollywood megastar Pitt has already expressed his keenness to get back in a Formula 1 car for a sequel, but Ferrari’s Hamilton, who was also a producer, isn’t so sure.
“I’ve seen some talk about it but we literally just finished it so I think the last thing we want right now is a sequel,” he told the media at the British Grand Prix.
“It’s been four years making this and it was a lot of work particularly for people like Joe being away from his family and kids.
“Also we need this to just simmer for a while and enjoy it, the worst thing we could do is rush into a sequel. Most sequels are way worse so we don’t need to rush it.”
Pitt, who plays returning veteran Sonny Hayes in the film, is far more eager though.
When asked if he’d be interested in a sequel, he responded: “Yeah man, absolutely.
“Even if I’ve aged out of it, still I’d like to see a sequel.”
Hamilton on his part is looking for another chapter of his own Hollywood script back at Silverstone.
The sport’s most successful ever driver is back at his home race this weekend, an event he’s won more than any other – a record nine times.
Hamilton is aiming for a return to the podium at his home raceGettyHe left Mercedes during the winter to complete every young fans dream of racing for Ferrari, but so far it hasn’t been the ideal closing part of the 40-year-old’s career.
Despite a sprint pole position and win, he’s been comprehensively out-performed by teammate Charles Leclerc in Grand Prix, and is aiming for a first proper podium this weekend.
Asked if he expects things to be different at Silverstone wearing the colours of a team that are more often than not rivals for the home crowd, he wasn’t so sure.
“I don’t really know what to expect,” he said. “As usual Thursday is the worst day of the week, I just want to be in the car and want Friday to come.
“I don’t know what to expect tomorrow but I’m sure driving the track at Silverstone for the first time in a red car is going to be unique and special in its own way and seeing the crowd rolling in. We have the best fans here.”
