From Ukiah United Methodist Church

It is always wonderful when an idea for something grows into a reality. In 2024, Kyle Whiterock, of the Mendocino College Native American Student Resource Center, along with students of the Missing and Murderd Indigenous People Movement, had the vision of creating a scholarship to help students with funding their educational endeavors.

Around the same time, Rev. Dr. Michele Robbins, of Ukiah United Methodist Church, was looking for a way to give proceeds that were raised for Native American students. They connected, and the first scholarship was funded.

Wanting to continue the funding of more scholarships, Dr. Robbins began working with other United Methodist churches in the Mendocino Circuit. Pastors Diana Hunter of Evergreen UMC in Fort Bragg, Kevin Murphy of Potter Valley UMC, Jaime Rogers of Willits UMC, and Roy Pina of Round Valley UMC were excited about the opportunity to work together on this and to share what they could for Native American students’ resources.

They recognize the historical trauma of Indigenous Peoples and the effects that it has on students working to complete their education. This is one way to come together to assist students in reaching their full potential.

When Dr. Robbins delivered the check from the circuit of churches, the people gathered in the student resource center were pleasantly surprised. Kyle Whiterock, Student Retention Specialist, stated, “The check for $1,641 will cover not just one, but three new scholarships for the fall semester. This allows the club and the college time to further their fundraising efforts.”

Dr. Robbins stated, “It is a small way to give back.” Brian Williams, a program manager of the Native American Student Resource Center, told Robbins, “Our Native American students will benefit tremendously from your work and thoughtfulness in their future success here at Mendocino College!”

It is the hope of the pastors and congregations of the United Methodist Mendocino Circuit that other churches and individuals will consider helping to fund more scholarships for Native American Students at Mendocino College. Questions on how to direct funds to this scholarship program can be directed to Brian Williams through the Mendocino College website.
