The Pittsburgh Steelers have constructed a roster this off-season that is built to win now.
Having traded away the sometimes problematic George Pickens, they have brought in a plethora of star talent in reinforcements on both sides of the ball.
Rodgers will spend his 21st – and potentially final – season in the NFL with the SteelersgettyDK Metcalf, Darius Slay Jr., Jonnu Smith, and Jalen Ramsey have all arrived as big name recruits alongside the biggest name.
After months of speculation, they landed four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers, with the 41-year-old veteran penning a one-year, $13.6 million deal with the AFC powerhouse.
With Russell Wilson and Justin Fields both heading New York bound with the Giants and Jets, respectively, there was some uncertainty over who the six-time Super Bowl champions’ primary signal caller would be.
Two years out from suffering an Achilles tendon rupture on his Jets debut, Rodgers has been spotted in Malibu working out with some of his new receiving troops.
Posting a picture on Instagram – a rarity for the 10-time Pro Bowler – Rodgers was seen training with Metcalf, Scotty Miller, Ben Skowronek, Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson, and tight end, Pat Freiermuth.
He captioned the post with just one word: “Summerball.”
Some Steelers faithful took to the comments section to hype up Rodgers and the team, with one fan posting: “See you at the Super Bowl bro.”
“7 dudes in the pic. 7th Lombardi coming. Keep your third eye open,” commented another fan.
“Aaron and his golden (Met)calf. A biblical prophecy fulfilled,” joked another fan.
“Boutta get scary in the Burgh,” a fourth fan said.
With the start of the 2025 season just single-digit weeks away, the NFL scriptwriters have hit (black and) gold yet again with the Rodgers’ first game for Pittsburgh coming on the road at MetLife Stadium against his former team.
Rodgers and Sauce Gardner had a great relationship at the JetsReuters Gardner is up for the ‘challenge’ of facing former teammate Rodgers in week 1 of the 2025 NFL seasonGettyThis blockbuster match-up has caused a stir around the league, and Jets star cornerback Sauce Gardner has expressed his excitement about the ‘challenge’ that awaits him and his team in week 1.
“Man, it’s going to be crazy. There’s going to be a lot of emotions in that game,” Gardner said on The Pat McAfee Show.
“I don’t care what people say about him, he’s a phenomenal person.
“I remember when he first got to New York and we went to dinner and I got to pick his brain in terms of stuff like me as a football player, things that I can give to let him know if I’m playing man or zone [coverage] or what I’m doing and stuff like that.
“And, when we got on the field, there’s just so much stuff that he’s taught me as a player.
“Me playing at cornerback, I’m not thinking that a quarterback can help me.
“I’m looking forward to it. He might think he knows all the tendencies that I have, but this off-season has really been me trying not to give anything away.
“I’ve been trying to work on literally everything because I already know that I’m about to go against a wizard in week one.
“I already know what time it is. They got [Darius] Slay, Jalen Ramsey, Jonnu Smith, DK [Metcalf], they’ve got some dawgs over there. So, Mike T [Tomlin] has definitely been cooking up and I am looking forward to the challenge.”
The Steelers have put all their chips in on trying to win the Super Bowl this off-season, having failed to win one since 2008.
But they must overcome the hurdle of winning a playoff game, having not won a single postseason game since 2016 when they went to the AFC Conference Championship.
With Rodgers indicating that this may well be his last season in the league, and with Father Time quickly catching up to him, this season is now-or-never for him, and perhaps the future of coach Tomlin as well.
