Nuggets hire Jared Dudley from Mavericks to be David Adelman’s top assistant coach, source says ...Middle East

News by : (The Denver Post) -

David Adelman has found his David Adelman.

The Nuggets are hiring Jared Dudley as their top assistant coach on Adelman’s inaugural staff, a league source told The Denver Post. Dudley, who turns 40 this month, met with the Nuggets in Denver this week after they secured permission to interview him from the Dallas Mavericks, where he has coached since 2021.

Adelman previously served in the lead assistant role under former coach Michael Malone. He took over as Denver’s interim head coach in April and got the full-time job a month later, after leading the team within one win of knocking off the eventual champion Oklahoma City Thunder in the playoffs.

Nuggets ownership granted Adelman autonomy to build out his own staff. He has already hired JJ Barea and Rodney Billups after electing not to retain Ryan Saunders, Popeye Jones, Charles Klask and Stephen Graham.

Dudley spent four years on Jason Kidd’s bench in Dallas after retiring as a player. He was part of the coaching staff that led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals in 2024 as a No. 5 seed. Before that, his 14-year playing career spanned seven teams and 904 games, culminating in a championship with the 2020 Lakers.

He also played for the Nets, Suns, Wizards, Bucks, Clippers and Charlotte Bobcats, who drafted him 22nd in 2007.

Dudley also interviewed with the Phoenix Suns earlier this offseason for their head coach opening, according to a report by Marc Stein.

The Nuggets are set to begin practices for their Summer League team in the next week, with assistant Andrew Munson slated to coach the team in Las Vegas for the second year in a row.

Cancar off to Europe

Vlatko Cancar will not return to the Nuggets next season, a league source confirmed to The Post.

Cancar is in talks to join the EuroLeague club Olimpia Milano, according to a report by BasketNews. Wherever the Slovenian forward ends up, though, it’s understood that he and the Nuggets are going their separate ways this offseason.

Denver drafted Cancar 49th overall in 2017, and he joined the team for the 2019-20 season after playing two years overseas. A close friend of Nikola Jokic and a longtime friendly face in the Nuggets’ locker room, he appeared in 143 NBA games across five seasons, mostly off the bench. He was on the 2022-23 team that won the NBA championship.
