SF Giants’ Doval blows save in ninth, secures win in 10th to snap losing streak ...Middle East

PHOENIX — It was not the most sustainable formula for a win, but the Giants will take anything they can get amidst their worst stretch of the season.

Camilo Doval blew a save in the bottom of the ninth inning by allowing a game-tying, two-run homer to All-Star starter Ketel Marte, but immediately rebounded to secure a 6-5 win by pitching a scoreless 10th inning to snap the Giants’ four-game losing streak.

For Doval, it was his first time pitching two innings since July 14, 2022.

Jung Hoo Lee enjoyed his best offensive games in recent memory, collecting a single, double and triple as he fell a home run shy of the cycle. For Lee, it was his first multi-hit game since June 4 and his first three-hit game since May 6.

Brett Wisely, the latest position player to start at third base amidst numerous injuries, made an impact as well by totaling two hits, a run and an RBI.

The Giants jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Mike Yastrzemski’s leadoff home run and Lee’s triple, a rare instance of San Francisco generating offense right from the jump. Entering play, the team’s .644 OPS in the first inning ranked 27th in baseball, and this marked only the sixth time all season that they’ve scored multiple runs in the first inning.

San Francisco expanded its lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning when Rafael Devers smashed a 106.6 mph grounder past first baseman Pavin Smith to drive home Wisely, who got a rare start at third base amidst the team’s flurry of injuries.

In the bottom of the fifth, things spiraled for Roupp in a hurry. He began the inning by allowing a solo homer to Alek Thomas, then walked Jose Herrera and Geraldo Perdomo to gift Arizona a free rally. After allowing a single to Ketel Marte, Roupp’s evening was suddenly over.

Left-hander Erik Miller entered the ballgame with no outs and loaded bases, tasked with protecting a two-run lead. Miller allowed one of those inherited runners to score as Josh Naylor hit a sacrifice fly, but the lefty limited the damage and walked off the mound with the Giants still leading, 3-2. Roupp’s final line: four-plus innings, two runs, four strikeouts, four walks.

From there, the Giants’ bullpen still had four more innings to cover. Cover, they did.

Bivens pitched a scoreless sixth with two strikeouts, and Rodríguez worked around a walk and a single to put up a zero in the seventh. Following the Giants’ two-run eighth inning on on RBI singles from Patrick Bailey and Wisely, Rogers allowed an unearned run but otherwise kept the lead intact.

That left Doval for the ninth with the Giants leading by two runs.

Doval began his night by allowing a leadoff single to Perdomo, immediately bringing the tying run to the plate. Marte, who was named an All-Star starter before the game, did what All-Stars do. With one swing, Marte sent a no-doubter over the right-field fence and tied the game with a backbreaking two-run homer. Doval retired the next three batters he faced to send the game to extras but the damage was done.

The Giants took a 6-5 lead in the top of the 10th inning when Bailey drove in Lee, the automatic runner, with a sacrifice fly. Instead of going with a fresh arm, manager Bob Melvin sent Doval out for the bottom of the 10th with a one-run lead.

Blaze Alexander, the automatic runner, advanced from second to third on Lourdes Gurriel Jr.’s fly out to center field, giving the Diamondbacks the tying runner on third with one out. With his back again against the wall, Doval struck out Jake McCarthy and Alek Thomas to secure the win.
