In a state dominated by political machines and one-party rule, Californians—especially those in Southern California—deserve to hear a message they’re not getting from either of the old parties:No kings.
“No kings” is more than a slogan—it’s a statement of values. It’s a rejection of authoritarianism in all its forms, whether it comes from a president, a bureaucrat or a city council. It’s a reminder that no one has the moral right to rule over others by force. And it’s a demand that power be returned to the individual.
For more than 50 years, the Libertarian Party has been the only political party in the United States with a platform built entirely on this idea: that government exists to protect rights, not to grant them—and certainly not to violate them. We believe in individual liberty, voluntary cooperation and peaceful exchange. The No Kings spirit lives at the heart of what it means to be a libertarian.
Unfortunately, California has become a model of what happens when people forget these principles. Our government—particularly in Southern California—claims to act in the name of progress and public good, but its actions often tell a different story.
Police operate with qualified immunity, shielding them from accountability when they violate civil rights. Small businesses and independent contractors are crushed under endless regulations, while politically connected corporations and unions receive special treatment. Homelessness surges while housing remains unaffordable, thanks in large part to red tape and government-induced scarcity. Nonviolent individuals are locked in cages for victimless crimes. And now, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are conducting immigration raids without due process, tearing families apart in working-class neighborhoods.
While the No Kings movement aims to resist authoritarian power, it’s worth noting that not all participants are free from it. Some of the most active institutional supporters—like public employee unions—operate through cozy, state-backed arrangements. These unions collect dues directly from workers via government payroll and often fund the very politicians they negotiate with, creating a feedback loop of influence and privilege. That’s not voluntary cooperation— that’s institutionalized collusion. If we truly believe in No Kings, we must oppose all special privileges, whether they benefit corporations, police departments or politically connected unions.
In communities across Southern California—from Los Angeles to Pasadena, Santa Monica to Anaheim—people are once again preparing to take to the streets. On July 4, protests under the banner of No Kings 2.0: Independence Without Tyranny will call for liberty and resistance to state overreach. On July 17, thousands will join a national day of action titled Good Trouble Lives On, honoring the legacy of John Lewis and demanding the protection of civil rights and democratic accountability. These events offer an important opportunity to amplify the call for freedom—but they also risk being co-opted by new centralized powers unless liberty-minded voices show up.
The Libertarian Party is the only political party calling for:
End the never-ending wars: Repeal the War Powers Act and end all offensive wars. Independent commerce: Repeal tariffs, end corporate subsidies and dismantle government-protected cartels in health care and agriculture. Due process: Abolish all laws against victimless crimes and guarantee fair trials for everyone, including immigrants. Civil liberties: End qualified immunity and stop the use of military force against civilians. Free immigration: End mass deportations, defund ICE and respect the basic rights of all people to live peacefully. Worker empowerment: End monopoly protections for public employee unions. Employers and employees should be free to work together without crony capitalism or government interference. All work and association should be voluntary.Related Articles
