U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and the U.S. District Court for Southern California will recognize 30 service members as new United States citizens aboard the USS Midway on Thursday.
Every year around Independence Day, USCIS hosts special naturalization ceremonies to welcome new citizens, with many held aboard the Midway in recent years.
“These individuals have chosen to serve a country that is not their own, and potentially sacrifice their live for the for the freedom and democracy that the United Sates stands for,” USS Midway Museum marketing director, Dave Koontz said.
“It continues to be a tremendous honor for Midway to host this important ceremony.”
Members of the armed forces who have served honorably for at least one year can apply for naturalization, provided they also meet requirements such as demonstrating good moral character and knowledge of U.S. history and government.
In addition, those who serve during designated periods of conflict may qualify for exemptions from certain residency requirements.
Military service members from at least 16 countries will be commended as part of Thursday’s ceremony, which will open with welcoming remarks from a USCIS official.
The ceremony will also see appearances by Chief U.S. District Judge Cynthia Bashant — who will deliver the Oath of Allegiance — as well as Congresswoman Sara Jacobs, who will close out the day with a congratulatory speech.
The 30 citizen candidates come from countries across the globe, including: American Somoa, Belize, Brazil, China, Colombia, Cote d’Ivoire, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Marshall Islands, Mexico, Peru, Philippines, and Vietnam.
“While born in multiple different countries, they each represent the true spirit of America, and we’re delighted that Midway’s flight deck is where the officially become U.S. citizens,” Koontz said.
The ceremony will take place at the USS Midway Museum and begins at 9 a.m.
