During a June 2025 interview with Collider, Ackles referenced that he has provided the voice for the iconic superhero in several animated movies, such as Batman: The Long Halloween, Legion of Super-Heroes, and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths since 2021. When asked how he would like to play a live-action Batman, the actor replied, "Oh, man. I don’t know." He referenced that a new Batman film would likely be helmed by director James Gunn, who is the co-chair of DC Studios.
When the Collider reporter, Tania Hussain, told Ackles she would keep her fingers crossed for him to play a live-action Batman, he responded, "I’ll cross ’em, too" while grinning.
Voicing an animated Batman isn't the only time Ackles has stepped into the world of superheroes (or rather supervillains). The actor has played Soldier Boy in the dark satire, The Boys, since 2022. He will continue to play the problematic character in the upcoming Boys prequel, Vought Rising. During the Collider interview, Ackles said he was looking forward to starring in the new series.
During a January 2022 interview on the Inside of You podcast, Ackles shared how he was cast on The Boys. He explained he had a conversation with the show's creator, Eric Kripke, when Supernatural, which lasted for 15 seasons, was about to end in 2020. As fans are aware, Kripke is the creator of Supernatural but left the series after its 5th season.
According to Ackles, he jokingly told Kripke he would like to appear in The Boys because he would be unemployed after Supernatural wrapped up. Kripke replied that he would love Ackles in the series and had him look at the role of Soldier Boy. Ackles clarified that he still had to audition for the role despite Kripke going to bat for him.
