Yashasvi Jaiswal puts dropped catches behind, scores important 87 after KL Rahul’s early dismissal ...Middle East

There’s something about facing England that brings the best out of Yashasvi Jaiswal. As we stand, 1/3 of the total matches (7/21) he’s played have come against England. But, Jaiswal has scored over 45% of his total Test runs against them (904 from 1990). It isn’t even like the southpaw opener dominated them at home, but so far in England, Jaiswal has scored one fifty and one hundred in three innings.

As we speak, Jaiswal averages over 64 in England. Not many have that record, even after just 3 innings. The opener is a special talent by all means. Despite making his Test debut less than two years ago, he’s got 16 fifty-plus scores for India. That places him behind just Rishabh Pant and Rohit Sharma, both of whom have 20 more innings.

Had he scored just 10 more runs, Jaiswal would have become the fastest Indian to score 2000 Test runs. That record currently belongs to Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag before and the southpaw can still level it in his next innings.

Masterful innings construction

Jaiswal started cautiously. Showed respect to Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse. The ball was doing a bit, and he survived a close call in the 7th over as Woakes pinned him down in the front. The umpire’s call saved him. There were also a few times when he went for his shots but was lucky not to edge the ball behind as well.

Luck was on his side, and he made full use of it. From the 12th over, we saw a different Jaiswal. Josh Tongue replaced Carse and Ben Stokes came in for Woakes after a 7-over opening spell. England’s third and fourth fast bowlers were erratic. Neither Tongue nor Stokes troubled him. Their line and length didn’t challenge him.

The short ball ploy didn’t work in Headingley and the same happened at Edgbaston. He didn’t go for his shots in the last Test, but this time around he didn’t back down. He took Tongue to the cleaners. In total, Jaiswal struck 6 fours against him, including three consecutive ones in the 22nd over to bring up his fifty in 59 balls.

Jaiswal looked set to score another hundred, his 6th. At lunch, he was unbeaten on 62 (69). Post that, England once again tried to box him down. The field was open and it was clear the short-ball ploy was going to be tried again. This time, it was Carse who had the ball in hand.

Jaiswal knew this wasn’t the time to take on one of England’s best bowlers. A big partnership was needed as Shubman Gill still hadn’t crossed into double digits. So, he restricted himself to taking singles. He knew, sooner or later, Carse and Woakes would be off and then he could cash in.

He would have easily scored his hundred in the second session itself but England were trying to give easy singles to him as they looked to attack Gill. 20 overs into the session, Jaiswal had played just 37 balls and scored 25 runs. And finally, Stokes got his wickets. He wasn’t able to play much and wanted to get to his hundred quickly, which forced a false shot and he had to depart on 87.
