TSA tells travelers to check with airline over special item rule – not following it risks unwanted delays at airport ...Middle East

TRAVELLERS heading through US airports are being urged to check with their airline before packing musical instruments or other special items in their hand luggage.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has reminded passengers that items like guitars, violins, drumsticks and cymbals require inspection at security checkpoints, and failure to follow procedures could lead to delays or even denied boarding.

Travellers are advised to inform officers if their instrument requires special careThe Mega Agency

In a recent Facebook post, the agency stated: “Musical instruments that are carried on require inspection.

“Let our officers know if your guitar needs special care and handling.”

TSA’s website confirms that all musical instruments—whether packed in carry-on or checked luggage—are subject to screening.

Instruments brought into the cabin, including guitars, violins, drumsticks and cymbals, must undergo a physical inspection.

Travellers are advised to inform officers if their instrument requires special care.

Brass instruments, meanwhile, should be packed in checked bags.

Passengers are also urged to check with their airline in advance, as cabin space varies and not all instruments may meet the size requirements for carry-on.

While the guidelines are clear, the final decision on what is permitted through the checkpoint rests with TSA officers at the gate.

This isn’t the first time the agency has been in the spotlight for inspecting unusual or personal items.

Books, for instance, can be flagged by scanners due to their dense composition.

Travellers have reported being asked to remove hardback novels and thick paperbacks for closer inspection, as they can appear suspicious on X-ray monitors.

Food items, too, have caused issues.

Partially eaten fruit, such as apples, must be properly wrapped, or they risk being confiscated.

TSA rules allow food in carry-on bags, but it must be secure and clearly identifiable.

In more peculiar cases, even service animals have been subject to checks.

Travellers with service monkeys have reportedly been asked to remove the animal’s nappy during screening, in compliance with safety procedures.

Snow globes remain a no-go for carry-ons due to liquid content, regardless of their size.

Sporting equipment like cricket bats is also not allowed in the cabin and must be checked.

Cremation urns, unless made of materials that can be clearly scanned, may also be denied boarding if contents cannot be verified.

The TSA insists that these measures are in place to ensure passenger safety and to reduce the risk of prohibited items making it onto aircraft.

While the process may seem excessive at times, the agency maintains that careful screening—whether it’s for a guitar, a book or a snow globe—is essential in securing air travel.

Musicians planning to travel are advised to make their instrument known to TSA officers and be prepared for inspection, especially if it is delicate or oversized.
