The Open returns to Royal Portrush this summer and if it’s anything like the 2019 tournament, we’re in for another treat.

Shane Lowry claimed one of the most popular major wins in recent memory when he raced away from the field to claim the Claret Jug six years ago.

Lowry will return to Northern Ireland hoping for another big week as will the rest of the star-studded field for the 153rd Open.

Xander Schauffele proved why he is one of the world’s top golfers at Royal Troon last year, holding off his rivals to claim glory.

The Open often sees the cream of the crop rise to the occasion.

But such is the quality in the men’s game at the moment, we could see a winner at Portrush come from lower down the bookies’ lists.

Robert MacIntyre 22/1

MacIntyre proved with his stunning display at the US Open last month that he is now ready to take the next step in his career.

The Scot enjoyed a breakout year last in 2024, winning his first PGA Tour event at the Canadian Open before claiming glory in his home event, the Scottish Open.

The 28-year-old has established himself as a world star now and he came close to winning his first major at Oakmont.

MacIntyre shot a final round 68 to pile the pressure on the field but JJ Spaun’s stunning finish just snatched victory.

Now, MacIntyre will hope to go one better than that runner-up place and become the first man from Scotland to win the Open since Paul Lawrie in 1999.

Viktor Hovland 25/1

Another man who performed well at the US Open is Hovland and the Norwegian is looking to be back to his very best again.

Hovland enjoyed a brilliant year in 2023, winning three times, but then lost form and confidence following a number of changes to his set-up.

He snapped that slump by winning the Valspar Championship in March and then finished third at Oakmont after a fine week.

He has four top-five-or-better performances at the majors and should be set to impress at Portrush.

Unfortunately, he recently had to withdraw from the Travelers Championship due to a neck injury and his fitness will need to be watched.

Morikawa was the Open champion in 2021Getty

Collin Morikawa 25/1

Morikawa remains without a win since the Zozo Championship in October 2023 but his game is trending in the right direction.

He has finished inside the top 20 in nine of his 13 events this season including being runner-up twice, at The Sentry and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

While he is in good form, Morikawa will enjoy a return to links golf.

The now-28-year-old was Open Champion at Royal St George’s in 2021 as he held off Jordan Spieth to win by two strokes.

It was his second major win following PGA Championship glory at TPC Harding Park in 2020 and he would love to return to the pinnacle of the sport at Portrush.

Recent Open Champions

2024: Xander Schauffele, Royal Troon

2023: Brian Harman, Royal Liverpool

2022: Cameron Smith, St Andrews

2021: Collin Morikawa, Royal St George’s

2020: Cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic

2019: Shane Lowry, Royal Portrush

2018: Francesco Molinari, Carnoustie

2017: Jordan Spieth, Royal Birkdale

2016: Henrik Stenson, Royal Troon

2015: Zach Johnson, St Andrews

Matt Fitzpatrick 50/1

Fitzpatrick is another major champion who will be looking to add a Claret Jug to his trophy cabinet.

After struggling for form earlier this year, Fitzpatrick has seemingly turned a corner and will be hoping to kick on.

He hasn’t won for a while now but has enjoyed better weeks recently at the PGA Championship, Travelers Championship and Rocket Classic.

His victory at the 2022 US Open proved he can mix it and win at the very top level of the sport.

And he will be looking to underline that and confirm it wasn’t a one-off by adding The Open title to his US Open success.

Fitzpatrick is eager for more major success

Sam Burns 66/1

Few players have been more unlucky in recent years than Burns was at the US Open last month.

Burns, who lost in a playoff at the Canadian Open recently, looked like he was edging his way towards glory at Oakmont before a rain delay ruined everything.

He double bogeyed his first hole after play resumed and then somehow didn’t get a ruling for his ball being in standing water as he doubled the 15th hole too.

It put paid to his chances and now he’ll hope to hit back at The Open.

Burns doesn’t have a great record on British links but he has been in brilliant form in recent months and is surely due a bit of luck!
