GREECE, N.Y. – The community is rallying around Cyonna Badger, a mother charged with negligent homicide after her 7-year-old son, Hakeem Badger, was hit by a U-Haul truck. Hakeem’s father, Kedar Ragans, wants to see Cyonna serve time in jail.
“I try to stop myself from crying every day. Hakeem, he just been a happy kid, you know, like cars, you know, like Spiderman, you know.” said Ragans.
Hakeem died two weeks after the crash. Ragans said, “I would like to see justice served… Justice for me looks like her doing time in jail. Like doing some real time even if it’s 10, 15 years.”
Cyonna Badger is accused of crossing a W Ridge Road during a green light with several children when Hakeem was hit. She is charged with negligent homicide and endangering the welfare of a child. The Monroe County District Attorney’s Office claims to have video evidence supporting the charges.
Clay Harris from United in Healing Hope Monroe County said, “She’s a grieving mother. She lost her seven-year-old son to one of the most horrific and tragic accidents that anybody ever want to see.”
Bishop Jeffrey Melvin of Power House Kingdom Cathedral Church of God in Christ said, “Drop all the charges. She’s going to have to live with this the rest of her life. It was a mistake. The child made a mistake by running in front of that vehicle.”
Despite the charges, Cyonna has a strong support system. Ragans, however, believes the situation was not an accident. “If you’re walking with multiple children and you’re walking with multiple people, it becomes, I feel like, it purposely done,” he said.
Cyonna Badger is expected back in front of a judge July 2. The driver of the U-Haul truck is not being charged in Hakeem’s death, which Ragans agrees with.
