Father Joe’s Villages will celebrate Independence Day early by hosting a special barbecue lunch for hundreds of neighbors experiencing homelessness in downtown San Diego. The event will take place on Thursday, July 3, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Father Joe’s Villages East Village Campus, located at 1501 Imperial Avenue.
The meal will feature classic Fourth of July favorites, including cheeseburgers, pasta salad, pickles, potato chips, assorted desserts, lemonade, and popsicles. Live music will be performed in the courtyard, adding to the festive atmosphere. The event will begin with a blessing from Deacon Jim Vargas, president and CEO of Father Joe’s Villages.
The barbecue provides more than food; it offers a welcoming space for social connection. Studies show that up to 90% of people experiencing homelessness suffer from loneliness or social isolation, which can increase risks of heart disease, diabetes, depression, and cognitive issues, especially among children.
“Too many people living on the streets right now are denied the freedoms our country promises: life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness,” said Deacon Vargas. “Our responsibility as their neighbors is to make this promise possible through investing in housing, health care, food, detox, and substance use disorder treatment.”
Events like this help foster community and provide access to vital services, including housing and healthcare, which are critical steps toward stability and independence.
