PB Pathways Phase 3 to refresh traffic-calming measures in Pacific Beach ...Middle East

PACIFIC BEACH – Nonprofit beautifulPB is making strides to create a safer, more connected community, including advances in mobility efforts for PB Pathways Phase 3.

The PB Pathways initiative is about implementing low-cost traffic-calming measures in areas identified by the beach community to make streets safer.

“While the city is in a budget deficit, we are continuing forward with advocacy for safe travel and beautiful infrastructure through searches for grant funding, donations, and donations,” said Ryan Stock, president of the grassroots group.

“Our focus remains squarely on our core mission: enhancing mobility, celebrating arts and culture, and fostering green spaces.”

Stock noted that plans for Phase 3 improvements were approved by Pacific Beach’s Parking District last November.

“We are now seeking funding and community input on individual pieces,” he said, adding, “We are pursuing an agreement with the city to beautify the traffic circle at Foothill and Loring, enhancing this critical traffic investment with PB flair. We are confident that investments in good infrastructure are worthy of funds even in tighter financial conditions, and are working hard to find those sources.”

One example, noted Stock, was a county grant awarded to beautifulPB last year to improve the group’s annual PB Counts. That project assesses non-motorized versus motorized traffic in designated parts of the community.

“As part of an effort to improve our understanding of travel in PB and make data-driven recommendations, we have activated two traffic-counting cameras that tally modes of travel, while maintaining strict privacy for our community,” said Stock.

“The cameras count traffic on Ocean Boulevard (Shore Club), and PB Drive across from Kendall-Frost Marsh, providing critical information about how pedestrians, vehicles, and bikes use the roads in these areas. We’ve found that active travel is a quarter of all passing vehicles in one section of PB Drive across from Kendall-Frost marsh.”

Stock explained that PB Pathways is a series of low-traffic neighborhood street initiatives dating back to 2014. He added that the concept is to have roadways designed as “bike boulevards,” otherwise known as neighborhood greenways.

“They are almost all shared road spaces, not bike lanes,” Stock said. “The idea is that these are the routes locals, who know the safest streets, use to get around and that by improving them we can lower the barriers of entry to activate travel around PB.”

PB Pathways Phases 1 and 2 were started in 2015. The long-term project involved installing PB Pathways decals and way-finding signage along a portion of the overall planned pathways roadway network.

“With Phase 3, we’re looking to refresh that network with some of the roads being repaved while adding additional ways of finding signs on more of the network,” Stock said. He added the renewed focus is now on “places people are already traveling on,” characterized by “lots of all-way stops” as well as those needing better, safer crossings, such as Garnet, Grand, and Ingraham.
