In a major boost for students across Southern California, the Cal Coast Cares Foundation has awarded more than $200,000 in scholarships to 82 local students, including 32 current or former foster youth, as it continues its mission to support academic achievement and community engagement.
The scholarships are aimed at college-bound high school seniors, foster youth, and current college students, helping them pursue higher education with fewer financial barriers. Recipients were selected for their strong academics, leadership qualities, and commitment to service. Foster students who meet academic milestones will also be eligible for continued support in their second year of college.
“This scholarship means so much to me,” said Charlotte Lourey, a Valhalla High School senior heading to UCLA. “It will allow me to follow my dreams of studying history, literature, politics, and philosophy, and help me eventually attend law school and focus all my energy on higher education.”
The awards reflect the foundation’s commitment to investing in students who show promise both in and out of the classroom.
“Providing scholarships is more than just financial aid,” said Penney Newell, Cal Coast Cares Foundation Manager. “It’s an investment in their futures, their potential, and the positive change they’ll bring to our communities.”
In addition to student scholarships, the foundation also supports local educators. Earlier this year, it awarded $75,000 in grants for classroom projects in STREAM subjects — Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Math — reinforcing its belief in the power of innovative teaching.
Since its founding in 2015, the Cal Coast Cares Foundation has awarded more than $1.3 million in scholarships and grants, helping ensure that students and teachers across the region have the tools they need to succeed.
