Britain’s Oliver Tarvet is being similarly teased at Wimbledon, with the world No 733 shown a cheque for £99,000 after reaching the second round here, only to be told he won’t be getting £94,000 of that.

The 21-year-old qualifier, who beat Leandro Riedi in straight sets on Monday and could face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz next, is studying at the University of San Diego (USD) and intends to return to college for a fourth year.

It means Tarvet, who has earned £2,100 already this year, stands to give Wimbledon back a significant proportion, that is unless his expenses run into the tens of thousands – for which he may enlist some help.

“Just pay my coaches a little bit extra. I don’t know. Fly business class. Obviously no… I keep humble.

Expenses must be “actual and necessary” per NCAA’s rules, and includes meals, transportation and accommodation, as well as coaching and physiotherapy.

He also suggested on Friday an NCAA rule change would be “good to see” having “worked hard” to earn the prize money, but he was reluctant to “overstep”.

Joint, the recent Eastbourne champion, attends the University of Texas and had to forfeit the majority of her $140,000 (£102,000) US Open prize money when reaching the second round last year.

For Tarvet, though, he has unfinished business Stateside.

Even if Tarvet loses on Wednesday, his collection of the prize money is unlikely to be a quick process. Only once he calculates expenses will organisers know how much goes back to Wimbledon, which in turn distributes its profit to the Lawn Tennis Association.

Tarvet has played in front of 800 people on the college circuit but now looks destined for a show-court date – if Alcaraz advances – on Wednesday, potentially gracing the 15,000-seater Centre Court.

“For it to happen so suddenly has been really special. If I do play him, I feel like nothing has changed. I’ve come here and not really set myself any expectations. I’m quietly confident that I can win against anyone. Alcaraz isn’t an exception to that.

Beyond the obvious prep, Tarvet will turn to journalling to stay grounded before his next match.

“That’s given me a lot of success, not even matches, before or after practices. If there’s a feeling that I like, a thought I like, I write it down so I have it on paper. That’s given me a lot of just comfort.

“Especially when you’re playing in big crowds, I feel like it’s important just to not let the moment get too big or lose your focus. It just keeps me grounded. I think that’s a big thing for me.”
