Nick Saban is recognized as the head coaching GOAT in college football, engineering national titles at LSU and Alabama across an illustrious career. However, he alone is just one part of Team Saban.
The other half is Miss Terry, Saban’s longtime wife of over 50 years, who has been by his side throughout that career. It’s hard to overstate the significance of their relationship, and Nick revealed an interesting nugget over the weekend.
On Saturday, Saban was officially inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame for his time leading the Tigers. Across a 5-year stint, Saban won 75% of his games, led the program to a national title and compiled a 48-16 overall record. He still ranks fifth in overall wins for the program and third in all-time winning percentage among coaches with multiple games coached.
However, getting to Baton Rouge was a struggle initially, Saban revealed. The head coach at Michigan State at the time of LSU’s opening, Saban was careful to avoid a public interview process.
“They offered me the job (in a secret meeting), but I said I can’t take the job because I’ve never been to LSU before, I don’t know what it’s like. And I can’t go for an interview, because if they find out publicly at Michigan State that I’m thinking of going someplace else, they’ll absolutely crucify me,” said Nick Saban. “So I sent Miss Terry.”
As the crowd began to laugh, Saban confirmed that it’s the truth and revealed Miss Terry spent 2 days reviewing the location and facilities. However, her reaction was not initially positive until she saw the players.
“She said, ‘Man, this place needs a lot of work… but I went in the weight room today, and they’ve got some damn good looking players’,” said Saban. “So that’s how I took the job.”
It still wasn’t sunshine and roses for Saban when he arrived for his press conference. In fact, he revealed he called Miss Terry to say the location did not match her interview description, to which she had a blunt response:
“Put your big boy pants on, get your ass in the press conference, and go to work,” Saban revealed to a round of applause.

In the end, everything worked out just fine for the Sabans and for LSU, but it was not a smooth beginning for Nick!
