OTD in 2024: When India lifted the T20 World Cup

Batting first, India faced an early setback as skipper Rohit was sent packing for just 9 runs in the 2nd over. Their worries compounded when Rishabh Pant was sent packing for a duck just two deliveries later. Suryakumar Yadav was the next to depart a couple of overs later, leaving India in a lurch.

But this is where veteran Virat Kohli stepped in and played what was a match winning knock. The former captain stitched together a crucial 72-run partnership with Axar Patel that saw India bounce back into the contest. Eventually, Kohli finished with 76 runs to his name while Axar managed 47 runs off 31 deliveries. A 27-run cameo from Shivam Dube powered India to 176/7 at the end of 20 overs.

“I’m sure even he (Virat Kohli) was thinking, ‘Today is the day—I need to stay focused and not worry about what happened in the past.’ He played a brilliant knock and stitched a crucial partnership with Axar Patel. It was really important for someone to anchor the innings, and he did it brilliantly. That allowed Shivam, Axar, and Hardik to come in and play their roles with freedom—and that’s exactly what they did,” Rohit Sharma said, speaking to JioHotstar.

But it nearly turned out to be not enough. South Africa needed 30 runs from as many balls at one point of time in the run-chase and it looked like things had gotten out of India’s hands. In came Bumrah and bowled what was a masterclass to get India right back into the game. Added to that was Suryakumar Yadav’s wonder catch that sealed the deal for Rohit and co.

“Surya was at long-off and that catch—honestly, it was the moment of the match. Even after he took it, the umpires were checking if he touched the rope. Everyone’s heart was in their mouth. I was at long-on, watching it unfold,” Rohit added.

Following the emphatic win, the trio of Rohit-Kohli-Jadeja announced their retirement from T20Is. having accomplished a major mission. Reflecting on the end of the 13-year-wait, Rohit said that it meant a lot for the group to lift the trophy after such a long time with Rahul Dravid at the helm.

“Barbados will forever be in my veins. This is the proudest moment of my cricketing career. To lift that trophy, to be crowned ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 Champions—it was surreal. I played in the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup and we won under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. And now, to win it again with Rahul Dravid as head coach—it meant everything to this group,” Sharma stated.
