The biggest race on Newcastle’s calendar takes place on Saturday as 20 horses are set to come up the long straight in the race fondly known as the Pitmen’s Derby.
The card features that famous old Northumberland Plate handicap and the consolation race, the Northumberland Vase. There is also a cracking Group 3 contest for the Chipchase Stakes.
Our expert, Clive Gildon, has a trio of selections on the card including one in the feature race, one in the consolation race and one in the opener.

Northumberland Plate tips
1.40 Newcastle – Durham Castle @ 4/1 2.40 Newcastle – Artisan Dancer @ 7/1 3.15 Newcastle – Asgard’s Captain @ 22/11.40 Newcastle – Durham Castle @ 4/1
Simon and Ed Crisford don’t send many runners to Newcastle, but they have an impressive 23 per cent strike-rate when making the journey and can strike in the opener with Durham Castle.
This rapidly improving four-year-old has won on the Tapeta, so will handle this surface, and he has shown better form on turf since. His best effort came at Windsor last time out when he comfortably beat a smart field and never looked in any danger. He is ahead of his mark.
He will need to be because the handicapper has nudged him up another 4lb in the weights, but he is still very lightly raced and open to lots of further improvement. There is every chance that he can prove too progressive for this field and he has a good draw on the stands’ side in eight.
2.40 Newcastle – Artisan Dancer @ 7/1
The Northumberland Vase is the consolation race for those who weren’t rated highly enough to get into the big one itself and the one who makes appeal here is the consistent Artisan Dancer.
The Charlie Johnston-trained runner has run five times since returning from a 249-day break this season and is yet to finish outside of the first three. His form figures read an impressive 21333 and among those were a second at Kempton and third at Chelmsford, both all-weather tracks.
That proves that Artisan Dancer won’t have any issue with the artificial surface and he caught the eye when third at Chelmsford last time. He was beaten only a length and a quarter by the winner Road To Wembley that day and did all of his best work in the late stages over 1m6f.
He has won over this trip and stays further than this, so the 1m6f last time was probably an insufficient test of stamina and better can be expected at this stiff track back over longer.
3.15 Newcastle – Asgard’s Captain @ 22/1
The Northumberland Plate has attracted another full field of 20 and it’s worth taking a chance on Asgard’s Captain, who is unproven at the trip but who shapes like he could be even better at this distance.
The Dylan Cunha-trained runner has caught the eye at Epsom twice on his last two starts. He was impressive when landing a big race by a wide margin there in April and then did all of his best work in the closing stages in a hot 1m4f handicap at the Derby meeting last time.
That was a strong hint that he might be suited by a test of stamina and he gets the chance to prove the visual impression right now that he goes up to two miles for the first time here.
The clincher is his record on the all-weather. Asgard’s Captain has won five times on sand, all on Tapeta, and his last three victories were at this track. The return to the course is in his favour.
