Driver swears ‘slow-pumping’ gas station technique fills her car’s tank for only $30 – but skeptics slam her ‘fuel hack’ ...Middle East

A DRIVER has claimed a simple trick at the gas station helped her fill up her tank for just $30.

In the video, which has racked up 1.3 million views since being posted on Monday, June 23, she has the receipts to prove it.

A TikTok user claims she filled her gas tank for just $30 using a “slow-pumping” trickTikTok/aleciaa2 GettyThe driver claimed the method nearly doubled her mileage (stock image)[/caption] TikTok/aleciaa2She showed her screen flashing a range of 522 miles, after spending just $30[/caption]

She filmed the hack from inside her car, which appeared to be parked at a gas station.

“God bless the person that said when you’re getting, or like when you’re pumping your gas, to put it on the slow setting,” she said.

“So it doesn’t cause those air bubbles.”

Alecia (@aleciaa2) claimed the slower flow somehow made her tank go further, nearly doubling her mileage.

She then showed her screen flashing a range of 522 miles after spending just $30.

“Do y’all see that? And this was $30,” she said. “It usually takes me $60 to fill my tank to like 400 miles.”

The clip quickly lit up with over 800 comments and 137,000 likes, with viewers split over whether the method works.

“I don’t remember the creator, but God will bless you,” Alecia added, giving credit to the unknown TikToker who inspired her.

Skeptics were quick to call out the science behind her so-called hack.

“I am genuinely confused. Gas pumps measure fuel by volume using a flow meter. Air or foam does not add any volume. Can someone explain?” one viewer asked.

Another person replied, “Pumping slowly can help reduce vapor loss and foaming, making your fill-up slightly more efficient and cleaner…”

One skeptic, who said they work for a fuel company, wasn’t buying it.

“I work for a fuel company. Trust me. It doesn’t work like that but if it makes you feel better sure!” they said.

“Girl the bubbles form after it comes out the nozzle; its still the same amount!”

How To Pump Gas

There are several steps you can take to safely pump gas.

Find Your Pump

Drive up to a pump, aligning your car’s fuel tank with the nozzle. Look for the fuel indicator arrow on your dashboard or the manual to know which side your gas tank is on.

Pay for Your Gas

You can either pay at the pump with a credit/debit card or pay inside. If paying inside, give the attendant your pump number and the amount you want to spend.

Open Your Fuel Lid

Use the lever or button inside your car to open the gas tank lid, or open it manually if your car doesn’t have a lever. Unscrew the gas cap.

Pick the Right Nozzle

Grab the correct nozzle from the pump (regular, premium, or diesel). Insert it securely into your gas tank.

Select Fuel Grade

Choose the fuel grade (usually regular, mid-grade, or premium). Check your car’s manual for the recommended fuel type.

Start Pumping

Pull the trigger to begin pumping. Most nozzles have a lever that locks in place so you don’t have to hold it.

Wait for Automatic Shutoff

Keep an eye on the pump. It will automatically stop when your tank is full. You’ll hear a click when this happens.

Remove the Nozzle and Close the Tank

Carefully remove the nozzle, return it to the pump, and make sure the gas cap is tightly secured.

Get Your Receipt

If you paid at the pump, decide if you want a receipt. If you do, print it; if not, finish the transaction.

Reset Your Odometer

Inside your car, reset the fuel odometer to track your mileage. Usually, turning your car back on will reset it.

Another added, “That has never worked for me I’ve tried this. This past weekend and got the same amount of gas.”

“It doesn’t work at every pump, but it’s worth a try at every pump,” someone else chimed in.

Some TikTok users backed Alecia up, saying they tried the trick and saw real results.

“Mine added an extra 100 miles when I did it!!” one commenter wrote.

“Also go at night or early morning when the ground is cooler!!” another suggested.

“Worked for me this week. Usually takes 65-70 to even get to near full. I did it with 50,” someone else claimed.

Others said the method wasn’t foolproof, but might work in some cases.

“I just did this yesterday lol it takes longer to fill, but it’s worth it,” one wrote.

MYTH BUSTED

Experts have since weighed in, pouring cold water on the theory.

AAA told CBS affiliate WJAX in June 2025 that the speed of the gas flow doesn’t impact how much fuel you receive.

The agency also noted that the “myth” is founded on the idea that since temperatures are lower at night it changes the consistency of the fuel itself.

AAA said fuel tanks – and the fuel in them – are stored in the ground and are therefore exempt from such temperature changes.

On top of that, AAA said, the flow of gas into your tank won’t have any impact on the tank itself and fuel is metered at the pump without aeration anyway.

The agency said the real vapor loss happens after the gas is sitting in your tank, not during the fill-up.

A fast fill might prevent you from getting a completely full tank, but it won’t impact the price, according to AAA.
