But no longer. In the early hours of Wednesday morning the 33-year-old Muslim and self-described democratic socialist caused a stunning political upset by claiming his first victory in the journey to get elected as a Mayor of New York. And in doing so, he handed the Democrats a road-map to take on Donald Trump.

Until recently the young man, whose Indian parents emigrated from Uganda when he was a child, was an outside bet for becoming the Democratic nominee and trailed behind former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the polls.

Cuomo, a moderate who had practically been New York royalty before resigning in disgrace amid multiple allegations of sexual harassment that he denied, had run on his experience of public office and knowing how to get things done.

Away from Mamdani’s policy details, many will see his victory as a win for the new generation of politicians and activists, and a loud and decisive defeat for politics as normal. Democrats have struggled to find a way to respond to Trump’s series of hardline policies and clashes with the courts since becoming president. With Republicans controlling both chambers of Congress, Democrats have failed to find traction as Trump has continued to steamroll them.

Cuomo, whose father Mario had also been governor, had hoped that securing the nomination could reignite his career, but for many New Yorkers was too tarnished, as was incumbent mayor, Eric Adams, who had been forced to run as an independent after facing corruption charges that were controversially dropped.

Cuomo conceded to Mamdani on Wednesday when only 93 per cent of the votes had been counted, admitting that Mamdani had run a “really smart and good and impactful campaign”. He added: “Tonight is his night. He deserved it. He won.”

The young candidate secured the youth vote by proving he knew how to make social media work for him. On Jan 1 2025, Mamdani filmed himself leaping into the chilly water off Coney Island, running in while wearing a suit, all to underscore another progressive policy: “I’m freezing… your rent as the next mayor of New York City,” he said, referring to the 44 per cent of apartments that qualified for rent control if city officials took action.

New York of course tends to swing left and Mamdani’s ideas and tactics may not succeed everywhere. But the fact that he pulled off a shock win by promoting ideas that are truly populist, and focused in a moment when many are struggling, ought to provide a blue print for Democratic candidates across the country as they figure out how to take on Trump and the Republicans in the fast-approaching midterms.

“Whether you voted for me, for Governor Cuomo or felt too disillusioned by a long broken political system to vote at all, I will fight for city that works for you,” Mamdani said. “That is affordable for you. That is safe for you. I will work to be a mayor you will be proud to call your own.”
