SELECT Americans will soon see a ban that targets some of their shower supplies.

Its one of several laws to be implemented in a popular US state starting next month.

After July 1, 2025, residents or those traveling to Illinois may notice a unique change if they stay at a larger hotel.

The smaller plastic bottles under six ounces that typically offer complimentary shampoo, conditioner, and body wash at the establishments will be gone from bathrooms.

It’s part of Illinois officials efforts to reduce plastic waste through Senate Bill 2960.

Due to the bill’s implementation, hotels with more than 50 rooms are banned from using the plastic bottles for complimentary shower supplies.

All hotels in the state, no matter the room size, will have to follow suit at the same time in 2026.

A case study conducted by Elkay Europe found that a 200-room four-star hotel uses about 300,000 single-use plastic pieces over the span of a month.

Not only are the smaller plastic bottles costly to manage and dispose of, but they also sit at landfills for quite some time.

At least 95% end up there, as they are either not fully used by guests or are not properly recycled, per Green Hospitality.

HOTEL HELP

Some hotel brands themselves have also taken steps to get rid of plastic bottles to become more sustainable.

Marriott International did this in 2019, replacing the small bottles instead with larger pump bottles that are refillable.

With that move alone, Marriott noted that it would keep around 500 million tiny bottles from going to landfills annually, which equates to around 1.7 million pounds of plastic.

That’s a 30% reduction from its previous usage, as a larger pump-topped bottle contains the same amount of product for guests as 10 to 12 single-use versions.

FOLLOWING ALONG

At least three other states have also made a similar move to Illinois with a ban on single-use plastic bottles.

California was the first to do it in 2023 for hotels and vacation rental properties, per EarthSuds.

States With Single-Use Plastic Bottle Ban

California – 2023 New York – 2025 Illinois – 2025 Washington – 2027

New York’s ban, signed in 2021 by Governor Kathy Hochul, began on January 1 of this year for hotels with 50 or more rooms.

Similar to Illinois, it will affect all hotels in 2026.

Washington also passed legislation for the elimination of single-use plastics at hotels, but its ban won’t start until 2027.

FOAM FALLOUT

The focus on banning materials harmful to the environment and human beings has also continued in some states when it comes to food and drink containers made out of polystyrene (EPS), commonly known as Styrofoam.

As of July 1, 2025, Virginia food vendors with 20 or more locations cannot use bowls, cups, plates, trays, or other items made from the material.

All food vendors will have to follow suit starting July 1, 2026.

Only about 1% of Styrofoam is successfully recycled in the United States and takes more than 500 years to decompose in landfills.

Not to mention, it’s been linked health problems like nervous system issues and cancer, among others.

Those considerations have also affected states like Washington, who issued the same ban last summer.

Even restaurants like Chick-fil-A and retail giants like Walmart have moved away from Styrofoam.
