In Trump’s telling of events, US fighter pilots are “heroes”, even “geniuses”, whose precision strike on the Iranian regime’s main enrichment facility in Fordo “obliterated” and “eliminated” the country’s nuclear programme.

But CNN and The New York Times on Tuesday published details of a preliminary battlefield assessment by the US Defense Intelligence Agency that flatly contradicts Trump. The leaked Pentagon report containing classified information argues that joint US and Israeli attacks may only have set Iran’s nuclear programme back by fewer than six months.
“I believe it was total obliteration. I believe they didn’t have a chance to get anything out, because we acted very fast”, he added, dismissing the assessment in the intelligence report that Iran had moved some of its enriched uranium stockpile from Fordo before the US assault began.

But this is not what the intelligence suggests. The report instead claims that the bunker-busters, which are supposed to be able to penetrate depths of 60m, successfully destroyed and sealed the entrances to two of the nuclear sites at Fordo but are not believed to have collapsed the structures and buildings beneath the ground.
She testified under oath on Capitol Hill that “Iran is not building a nuclear weapon, and Supreme Leader [Ali] Khamenei has not authorised the nuclear weapons programme that he suspended in 2003”. Last week, Trump insisted Gabbard was “wrong”, excluded her from Situation Room meetings where the air strikes were planned and approved, and fuelled speculation in Washington that her days in the administration may be numbered.

But the stage is now set for Trump not only to attack the messengers, but the intelligence report itself. Within hours of the leak White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt issued a statement that attempted to pour cold water on the report, calling it “flat-out wrong”, describing it as an “alleged assessment” even while conceding it was an authentic, “classified, top-secret” document.

Trump has long expressed hostility towards the US intelligence community, accusing it of complicity in what he calls the “Russia hoax” after the FBI and other intelligence agencies concluded Russia had actively interfered in the 2016 Presidential election to boost Trump’s chances of victory over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Trump has never forgiven the intelligence community for those initial assessments, nor for arguing that Russia also weighed in on Trump’s behalf in the 2020 campaign.
But he will soon find it even harder to control the narrative, given that members of the Senate are due to receive their own classified briefing on the outcome of the attacks on Fordo. Democrats on Capitol Hill are preparing to pounce if they receive direct confirmation from the intelligence community that Trump has failed to degrade the nuclear threat from Iran.
