Ton-up Rishabh Pant danger sign for Team india in away Tests, here’s why? ...Middle East

Even in India’s defeat, the brightest spot was Rishabh Pant. India’s Test vice-captain became the second wicketkeeper-batter after Andy Flower to score twin tons. However, his majestic effort did not give India any positive result as England chased down 371 to win the Headingley Test. But there is a pattern. Pant has been the most unlucky player. Team India have never won a Test match away when Pant has scored a century.

The Headingley Test wasn’t a one-off incident. It happened in England three times, in 2018, 2022 and 2025. India lost at the Oval, Edgbaston and Leeds with Pant scoring centuries. In South Africa, India lost in Cape Town. The only time India did not lose was in Australia in 2019 when the match ended in a draw.

Overall, out of his 8 Test centuries, 6 have come in SENA countries, including four in England. While that is an excellent feat, Team India haven’t benefited from his tons.

The Oval Test, 2018 – Lost

Chasing a target of 463 to win the final Test of the tour, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant were the only highlights as others fell miserably. Pant added a 204-run stand for the sixth wicket, scoring 114 to keep India in the chase. However, India ended up losing the match by 118 runs.

Sydney Test, 2019 – Draw

A year later, as India toured Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Rishabh Pant smashed 159 in the first innings. Thanks to his century and Cheteshwar Pujara’s 193, India posted a mammoth 622/7 total. Pant added another 204-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja for the 7th wicket. However, with rain playing spoilsport, India missed out on a win, despite enforcing follow-on and bowling Australia out for 300 in the first innings. But India won the series 2-1 and it was a happy ending.

Cape Town Test, 2022 – Lost

On a difficult Cape Town pitch, Rishabh Pant was India’s man Friday in the 2nd innings. In fact, he was the only batter who stood tall as others fell like a pack of cards. India were bowled out for 198 with Pant remaining unbeaten on 100. South Africa chased down the 212-run target easily to win the 3rd Test and the series.

Edgbaston Test, 2022 – Lost

With Rohit Sharma out with Covid-19, Jasprit Bumrah made his India Test captaincy debut. India were 2-1 up in the series and had a chance to win the series in England for the first time since 2007. Rishabh Pant was the highlight once again, scoring 146 & 57 in two innings. But his century went in vain as Bazballing England chased down 378, their highest-ever to win the 5th Test in Birmingham and draw the series 2-2.

Headingley Test, 2025 – Lost

In the IND vs ENG 1st Test, Rishabh Pant broke records, becoming only the 2nd wicketkeeper-batter ever to score centuries in both innings. India posted 471 in the 1st innings as Pant scored 134. But six dropped catches allowed England to close in on the total, scoring 465 in the first innings. Pant once again scored a century (118) in the 2nd innings, becoming the seventh Indian batter to score twin tons. But India could only post 364 and England chased down 371 to win the Test.
