Diamondbacks scratch Josh Naylor from lineup before 1st pitch vs. White Sox ...Middle East

The Arizona Diamondbacks scratched Josh Naylor from their batting order on Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox after he left Monday’s game with right shoulder discomfort.

Arizona initially had Naylor batting fourth as the designated hitter with Pavin Smith getting the start at first base. Randal Grichuk entered the lineup as the DH against White Sox right-hander Jordan Leasure, batting sixth with Lourdes Gurriel Jr. moving up to the cleanup spot.

Whether Naylor was scratched as a precaution or due to a new development has yet to be announced. The team said Naylor was “day-to-day” after coming out of Monday’s game.

Third baseman Eugenio Suarez, meanwhile, was held out of Tuesday’s starting nine after taking a fastball off his hand on Monday. X-rays came back negative after he left in the first inning. Ildemaro Vargas took over at third base on Monday and received the start on Tuesday.

“Those things are hard to say,” assistant general manager Amiel Sawdaye said of Suarez’s hand injury on Arizona Sports’ Wolf & Luke.

“I think the last couple we’ve seen with Gabi (Moreno) and Corbin (Carroll), they got hit in the hand and then it just didn’t respond very well. Geno might be the toughest player in the major leagues. He’s one of the toughest that I’ve ever been around. I think the news was somewhat positive last night based on the X-rays. But he is gonna have to go out there and try it out and see how much pain he’s in.”

Naylor and Suarez have provided the punch to the middle of Arizona’s lineup, and their most recent ailments come at an inopportune time for both the players and the club.

The Diamondbacks placed Carroll on the 10-day injured list with a fractured wrist retroactive to Saturday, recalling outfielder Jake McCarthy to take over in right field. McCarthy moved up in Tuesday’s lineup to fifth after Naylor’s removal. Moreno has been on the IL with a fractured finger since Thursday.

Naylor is riding a 12-game hitting streak and has slashed .303/.358/.467 this season with nine home runs and 51 RBIs. He also crushes the White Sox, hitting .342 against them in 51 career games.

Suarez is batting .421 with seven home runs over his last 11 games, as he leads the team with 25 home runs and paces the National League with 67 RBIs.

First pitch on Tuesday is at 4:40 p.m. MST on 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app.
