Whether his idea of universal excellence in healthcare would have extended to the dispensation of a drug that would enable people lose weight without the need for willpower, self-restraint and personal responsibility cannot be known. But it’s maybe a measure of how far the NHS has come in those 80 years that this week sees the availability of the miracle weight-loss drug of the moment, Mounjaro, through GP surgeries in England.
The Government Office for Science estimates that obesity-related illnesses will cost the NHS – in other words, we the taxpayers – £9.7bn by 2050. Every generation is heavier than the one which came before. Around 220,000 people will be eligible to be prescribed Mounjaro over the next three years.
Well, there is an argument that this state-sponsored short cut to better health removes a large element of personal responsibility from the patient and creates a dependency on a drug that we are still learning about.
Irrespective of what we don’t know, the advent of Mounjaro as a substitute for self-control and willpower is entirely in keeping with our labour-saving, quick-fix culture. Why worry when we now have an easy and effective way of shedding weight, which doesn’t need to involve counting calories, five-mile runs and general abstinence?

The bigger concern is the extra strain it will place on our already hard-pressed GPs, given that the dispensation of Mounjaro requires assessment, regular check-ups, and follow-up care. The call for extra resources being diverted to GP surgeries will be difficult for NHS administrators to ignore.
There is also the lack of physical activity among the young, and a more sedentary lifestyle for all of us. The idea that we would take the individual and collective responsibility to tackle our weight problem and reduce the stress on ourselves and the NHS is a fanciful idea. The queues that are soon to appear outside GPs’ surgeries will testify to this.
