Trump’s claim of a truce between Israel and Iran contain one crucial caveat ...Middle East

He claimed a major trade deal had been done with the UK even though none of the details had been agreed. He said a similar agreement had been reached with China even though it required final approval.

“On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, ‘THE 12 DAY WAR,” the president posted on social media.

If he is correct it will represent a welcome conclusion to several days of dizzying concern over whether the decision to attack Iran would trigger a wider regional war, rather than a peaceful solution.

The day after the “bunker buster” hits on three sites, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi denounced the action and said Tehran reserved “all options to defend its security interests”.

With more than 40,000 US troops in the region – and British forces stationed there also – there were lots of potential targets. Not to mention the potential for Iran interfering with shipping in the Persian Gulf.

Crucially, the attack was modest in nature, all of the missiles were taken down by air defences, and nobody was hurt. Iran even informed the US of its plan beforehand.

He said he hoped Iran had got the need to respond “out of their system, and there will hopefully be no further hate”.

In January 2020, after Trump ordered the assassination of a senior Iranian general, Qassem Soleimani, Tehran responded a few days later by firing a dozen ballistic missiles at two air bases in Iraq that housed US troops.

The decision by Tehran and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to limit its response so far to the almost perfunctory firing of missiles at Al Udeid, a place well equipped to defend itself, highlights the poor hand Iran currently has as it assesses how to proceed.

For more than a week, Iran has also been engaged in a bloody conflict with Israel, which was initiated by its prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

A succession of US presidents have struggled to respond to Iran, even though the country has insisted it is not seeking a weapon and only wants to enrich uranium for domestic energy production. US intelligence has repeatedly said there is no evidence of a weapons programme.

Over the weekend, Trump did that – attacking sites at Natanz, Fordo and Isfahan, and all the while claiming he was ready to negotiate.

If Iran is willing to return to the bargaining table – and if Israel will permit it – there could be an agreed ceasefire.

And that was the enticing prospect suggested by Trump’s words. Everyone will be hoping he is correct.
