ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Some lucky Rochesterians became the first in the world to view images from the new Rubin Observatory. The images were displayed at the Rochester Museum and Science Center’s Strasenburgh Planetarium on Monday morning.

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory, located in Chile, collects information about galaxies in the nearby universe and tracks space explosions like supernovas. The data it collects will be made public, which has local researchers excited.

“The Ruben Observatory will produce this really rich atlas of the nearby universe in a way that I think we haven’t seen before,” said a researcher. “So it’s really going to produce a new view of the sky that’s going to be incredibly valuable for many decades.”

The Rubin Observatory owes its existence to Rochester, as components were built at L3Harris’s Rochester facilities.
