ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Gov. Kathy Hochul has called for construction of the first new nuclear power plant in Upstate New York in nearly 50 years.
Hochul has directed the New York Power Authority with the project. The new plant will have a capacity of at least one gigawatt of electricity, according to state leaders.
According to Hochul, she says New York “needs new, clean electricity resources to meet growing power demand from new industrial development,” and that nuclear power is a clean energy solution that’s needed to power new economic sectors like artificial intelligence and semi-conductor manufacturing.
“They don’t run on dreams — they need to be powered, they need a lot of electricity,” said Hochul. “So if we don’t increase New York’s electricity supply in a major way, we’re going to risk losing our opportunities. They can go elsewhere, but we want them here.”
A location for the plant has not been decided yet. One of the three current nuclear power plants in the state is Ginna in the Town of Ontario in Wayne County.
