CHCCS Board Vice Chair Riza Jenkins Announces 2025 Re-Election Bid ...Middle East

News by : (chapelboro) -

Riza Jenkins, the vice chair of the Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools school board, announced her intention to run for re-election. She shared details about her candidacy in a Facebook post on June 4.

“I remain committed to advancing our shared mission of providing an equitable, inclusive, and high-quality education for every student in our district,” the post read. “With your continued support, we can ensure that Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools remains a place where every child thrives.”

Jenkins was first elected to the school board in 2021, earning the most votes of any candidate in that race. She told 97.9 The Hill that her reasons for seeking a second term are simple.

“It may sound cliché, but there is still work to do,” she said in a written statement. “Working with the staff, I learned about school finance and programs across the district. Now we can continue the work as we embark on building new schools and implementing a fiscal strategy that aligns with our instructional programming.”

In 2024, as the board reviewed plans for school infrastructure expansion, Jenkins advocated for spreading out any new schools or expansions of schools in order to better address capacity problems across the district. She was one of the board members who oversaw position cuts to CHCCS in late 2024, and helped select Rodney Trice as the new district superintendent.

Jenkins said that helping create the student success committee is one of her proudest achievements from her first term.

“The student success committee focuses on monitoring student data and performance, which allows the board to understand and ensure the work that we are doing for our children has the intended impact,” she said. “And if not, we can work with the staff to determine what needs to be adjusted to address it.”

She added that the main thing she wants voters to know is that her priority is CHCCS’s students and staff.

“I am committed to our children and providing them with the opportunities to learn and access the tools they need for their future,” said Jenkins. “Also, I want to support our staff because without them we do not have the people to educate, mentor, and support our children.”

Jenkins is one of three members of the seven-person board whose term expires in 2025, along with Michael Sharp and chair George Griffin. Griffin announced his re-election campaign in May, while Sharp has not yet made a public announcement.

The filing period for the 2025 municipal election cycle in North Carolina begins the morning of Monday, July 7 and will run through 12 p.m. of Friday, July 18. Election Day for the 2025 municipal elections will be Tuesday, Nov. 4.
