The Syrian transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, extended his condolences to the families of the victims of the bombing that targeted St. Elias church in the Dweila area of Damascus on Sunday, June 22.
In a statement reported by the Syrian news agency (SANA) today, Monday, June 23, al-Sharaa said, “We extend our deepest condolences and sincerest sympathies to the families of those who died in the criminal bombing that has affected all of the Syrian people, and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured.”
He added that this “heinous” crime, as stated in the announcement, which targeted innocent civilians in their places of worship, should remind Syrians of the importance of solidarity and unity in facing any threats to the security and stability of the homeland.
He continued, “We all stand today as one, rejecting oppression and crime in all its forms, and we pledge to the afflicted that we will work day and night,” stressing that all concerned security agencies in Syria are working around the clock to apprehend everyone involved in planning and executing this crime and bring them to justice to receive their fair punishment.
The death toll from the bombing of the St. Elias church in the Dweila area of Damascus has risen to 25 dead and 63 injured in a preliminary count, according to the Syrian Ministry of Health reported to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) today.
United Nations condemnation
The UN resident coordinator and humanitarian affairs coordinator in Syria, Adam Abdelmoula, condemned the “tragic” incident that occurred at St. Elias church in Damascus, where a suicide bomber targeted civilians gathered for prayer.
In a statement published by the United Nations on its Syria website, he said reports indicated many casualties, including women and children, believing that the attack was deliberately aimed at a place of worship, at a time when Syria is on the path to recovery, reconciliation, and reconstruction.
Abdelmoula confirmed the United Nations’ commitment to standing by Syria and its people, urging all relevant authorities to take all necessary steps to ensure the protection of civilians, bring the perpetrators to justice, and prevent the recurrence of such tragedies.
Arab and international condemnations
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan condemned the bombing of St. Elias church in Damascus in a post on “X” today, Monday, June 23, and confirmed that he would not allow Syria to be drawn back into an unstable environment by terrorist organizations aligned with others, while continuing to support the Syrian government in its efforts to combat terrorism.
Similarly, French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the targeting in a post on “X”, expressing solidarity with the families of the victims and the injured, and reaffirming his country’s support for the Syrian people in their struggle against terrorism and for the return of peace.
In the same context, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, condemned the bombing, and the spokesman for the Secretary-General, Jamal Rushdi, indicated that the Secretary-General noted the continuing threat posed by terrorist organizations, especially the Islamic State organization, expressing hope that the Syrian government would manage to confront these terrorist groups and others that target civil peace in Syria and the region, according to the Syrian news agency (SANA).
The Arab Parliament condemned the bombing of St. Elias church in Damascus, asserting that it represents an attack on the sanctity of places of worship and a direct threat to the safety and security of civilians.
In a statement published on its official website, it clarified that this act is a blatant violation of all humanitarian principles and religious values, as well as of international humanitarian law.
The European Union also published a statement on its website, emphasizing the need to intensify efforts to confront the terrorist threat and eliminate Islamic State and other terrorist organizations entirely.
The Union expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and its solidarity with the Syrian people, supporting all efforts made by the Syrian authorities to ensure the safety of all Syrians without discrimination.
For its part, the Gulf Cooperation Council issued a statement on its official website, expressing solidarity with Syria in combating terrorism.
The Secretary-General of the Council, Jasem Mohammed al-Budaiwi, confirmed the support of the GCC countries for Syria, calling for all regional and international powers to unite in support of Syrian efforts in this regard.
