In February 2009, Nash, now 71, was viciously attacked by Travis, a pet chimpanzee owned by her friend Sandra Herold. During the attack, the animal tore off Nash's face, including her nose, lips, eyelids, and hands. Following the accident, Nash underwent a groundbreaking face transplant in 2011, which was funded by the U.S. military to study how such procedures could help injured veterans.

Despite the difficulties, she remains optimistic, sharing that the transplant “brought [her] life back.” She credits the surgery for restoring some semblance of normalcy, even as she continues her daily rehabilitation. “Life's getting better, it is coming around slowly but yeah it's getting better, It's hard but it's better,” she recalled.

The incident occurred when Travis became aggressive after attempting to escape by taking car keys. Herold, his owner who passed away a year later in 2010, tried to calm him with Xanax-laced iced tea, but when Nash, a friend and employee, arrived to help, that’s when tragedy struck and the animal attacked her. Investigators suggested that Travis may have mistaken Nash for an intruder due to her new hairstyle.
