Federal cuts to medical research affect communities around the country, including San Diego — and the Prebys Foundation is teaching San Diegans how to take action.
The Prebys Foundation, named for developer-turned-philanthropist Conrad Prebys, provides grants to a variety of nonprofits serving the San Diego community. The foundation invests in programs and organizations dedicated to visual and performing arts, medical research, flood relief and youth development.
This time around, the foundation is focusing on community action against federal medical research cuts.
On Thursday, June 26, the foundation is hosting a panel discussion in partnership with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. “This Affects All of Us: The Real Impact of Cutting Medical Research Dollars” will have a panel that comprises a mix of doctors, advocates and patients, sharing their stories and expertise.
Doctors Mike Taffe, Matthew Bainbridge, Arun Sethurman, Svastic Haricharan and Thomas Neuman will be joined by Karen McDonald, sharing her own patient story. Though the doctors are from a variety of universities and hospitals around San Diego, they are all sharing their personal views and not representing their respective organizations at the event.
The event will begin at 1 p.m. in the Neil Morgan Auditorium at the San Diego Central Library and will go until 2:30 p.m. The panel will take up most of the event, running until about 2:15 p.m. At the conclusion of the panel, there will be about 15 minutes for attendees to speak with panelists one-on-one.
The event is free, but the Prebys Foundation is requesting an RSVP for the event.
The event isn’t just focused on the cuts being made at the federal level or how federal actions trickle down to affect local communities. It’s about what community members can do. The event is focused on informing San Diegans and providing them with simple ways to take action.
The Prebys Foundation believes “informed communities drive civic engagement, and civic engagement protects and advances the well-being of our communities.”
