“It’s been a mess,” Townshend told The i Paper on Friday, June 20, 2025. The drama started during a Royal Albert Hall performance in March 2025 when Townshend's co-founder, singer Roger Daltrey, accused Starkey of overplaying and dropping beats on the song “The Song is Over" and fired him from the band. The drummer, who is Beatles drummer Ringo Starr's son, was reinstated three days later, only to be formally dismissed again in April.

The iconic guitarist is careful not to upset his longtime partner, adding, "I have to be careful what I say about Roger because he gets angry if I say anything about him at all. He’ll be sacking me next." Still, he insists he and Daltrey "tried to make" the decision about Starkey "together," though things "got out of hand."

“I will miss Zak terribly," he concluded. "But quite what the story is, I don’t f**king know. I really don’t know.”

The 2025 tour is billed as The Who's farewell tour, with Townshend announcing their impending retirement in May 2025. “Well, all good things must come to an end. It is a poignant time," he said in a statement, according to Ultimate Classic Rock. "Roger and I are in a good place, despite our age, eager to throw our weight behind this fond farewell to all our faithful fans, and hopefully to new ones who might jump in to see what they have been missing for the last 57 years. This tour will be about fond memories, love, and laughter. Make sure you join in.”
