IND vs ENG 1st Test: Batting collapse, fielding lapses and Gill’s inexperience – India concede Headingley advantage ...Middle East

India took a 6-run lead in the IND vs ENG 1st Test at Headingley, Leeds. Jasprit Bumrah took a five-wicket haul as the hosts were bowled out for 465 in response to India’s 471. The visitors had every chance to wrestle the advantage but some shoddy batting, lackluster bowling and slippery fielding meant that the game was evenly poised at the end of the 1st innings.

India had 3 Test centurions and a five-wicket haul in the IND vs ENG 1st Test. Yet, they come into bat in the second innings on an even kneel with England, after a series of mistakes. Shubman Gill and Co had a near perfect Day 1, but England restored parity on Day 2 and after Lunch on Day 3. While the hosts battled it out, their performance was largely down to India failing to make the most of their chances in the field. Gill’s inexperience as leader was clear to see, with the burden on Bumrah to get India to any advantage.

Batting collapse

At Stumps on Day 1, India were 359/3. Shubman Gill had scored his first SENA hundred, while Rishabh Pant was well set on 65. He reached his century before Lunch and India were cruising at 430/3. However a Ben Stokes forced batting collapse saw India slip to 471 all out. Karun Nair and Sai Sudharsan, India’s replacements for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma both got ducks. A 500+ score would have only strengthened India’s grip on the game, but their tail could not hold their own in helpful batting conditions.

Jasprit Bumrah, India’s one man bowling attack

Jasprit Bumrah is now the most successful Asian fast bowler in SENA conditions. He picked up his 12th fifer overseas, in just 34 Test matches. However, Bumrah had little support with both Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna listless. Krishna, conceded at 6.40 in his 20 overs, while Siraj conceded 4.5 in his 27 overs. They were wayward, failing to penetrate the England line up. While they did combine for the remaining five wickets, they were utterly disappointing.

What is Shardul Thakur?

Shardul Thakur struggled in the practice games but made his mark in the intra-squad practice game. He was picked ahead of Nitish Reddy, with the idea of adding extra bowling cover. However, Thakur scored just 1 run off 8 balls in the first innings. With the ball he was largely underused, bowling just 6 overs. Shardul conceded over 6 an over in a disappointing display with both bat and ball. His ineffectiveness and lack of Gill’s trust in Thakur begged the question of the Mumbai pacer’s value to the side.

Butter fingers

Jasprit Bumrah took a fifer and could have had more if not for India’s shoddy fielding. Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped three catches, Ravindra Jadeja dropped a sitter while Sai Sudharsan and Rishabh Pant also joined in. Add Jasprit Bumrah’s no-ball to Brook, India missed seven chances in the first innings alone. The result? Ollie Pope scored a century, Brook got 99 and Ben Duckett smashed 62. It is their worst display in the last 5 years, allowing England to claw back into the contest.
