LSU baseball coach Jay Johnson had some high praise for Kade Anderson after his historic performance on Saturday night in Omaha.
Anderson powered LSU to a 1-0 victory over Coastal Carolina in Game 1 of the College World Series finals. It took 130 pitches, but Anderson struck out 10 batters across 9 shutout frames. It was the first complete game-shutout at the CWS since 2018.
After the game, Johnson was asked about Anderson’s impact on LSU and what this performance meant. He compared him to LSU great Paul Skenes, who is now regarded as one of the best pitchers in baseball just 2 years after leading LSU to a national championship in 2023.
“He’s the best pitcher in college baseball,” Johnson said of Anderson. “I mean, we had the best pitcher on the planet two years ago in a similar situation. I felt like Kade’s had a very similar season to that. And that’s how you get here. I’m really proud of him. And I think the commonality between the two is the person, the character, the toughness, the team-first attitude.”
Johnson also commented on next month’s MLB Draft. The Washington Nationals have the No. 1 overall pick and Anderson has been gaining momentum in recent weeks as the potential pick in that slot.
“And you’re probably right. I mean, his next pitch should be for someplace in the Washington Nationals organization. It’s not close. And they usually draft really well. And he’s the best player in the country. There’s nobody closer to the Major Leagues than that right now.”
LSU and Coastal Carolina will face off again on Sunday afternoon with the Tigers being just 1 win away from the national title. The game is set for 2:30 p.m ET on ABC (click here for a FuboTV free trial).
