The Marsa Alam Investors Association in the Red Sea governorate called for an urgent intervention from relevant authorities to support the region’s electrical power supply to operate thousands of new hotel rooms, in order to help meet Egypt’s goal of attracting 30 million tourists annually.
Marsa Alam investors explained that there are currently more than 7,600 investment opportunities available in Quseir and Marsa Alam, opportunities that may not be realized if the current electrical shortage persists without radical improvements to the electrical infrastructure.
The Vice President of the Marsa Alam Investors Association, Atef Abdel-Latif, said that the city boasts unique tourism assets, from pristine beaches and nature reserves to safari trips and marine activities, which have become hallmarks. However, the city suffers from a serious obstacle: its energy system is unable to keep pace with the anticipated growth in hotel room numbers.
He revealed figures that reflect the extent of the gap, with the number of hotel rooms currently operating standing at only 18,405, representing less than 30 percent of the total targeted hotel capacity.
There are 9,437 hotel rooms under construction, meanwhile, in addition to 31,986 additional rooms planned for the future, indicating the extent of investment ambition in the region.
Abdel-Latif pointed out that a large number of existing hotels are forced to operate on diesel fuel via private generators to provide electricity, a costly and environmentally unsustainable option that conflicts with the national trend toward green and sustainable tourism.
Relying on diesel prevents the expansion of new hotel rooms, increases operating costs to an unsustainable level, and has a negative environmental impact, he said.
