And he will not be looking for a new team, confirming in an emotional Instagram post: “Once upon a time, a kid from Mobile, Ala., had a dream to do great things on the football field.
“Today, it is time to wake up from my childhood dream and share it with the next generation.
“I spent my whole life and career building my legacy. Now, it’s time to start a new chapter with new dreams.
“It won’t be easy, but I’m here to tell you every sacrifice is worth it.
“When you wake up, what will your legacy look like?”
Mosley, who penned a $95.5 million five-year contract in 2019 with the Jets, featured in just four games last season due to toe and neck injuries.
His time in New York was a success, however, becoming the team’s MVP in 2021 and making the Pro Bowl a year after.
It was his final Pro Bowl appearance, having made it five times.
Mosley has been tipped to go into coaching after mentoring Quincy Williams and Jamien Sherwood in recent years.
Before his time with the Jets, Mosley spent four campaigns at the Baltimore Ravens.
He was a first round, 17th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
Fans reacted his retirement, saying: “Underrated his whole career.”
Another added: “I love CJ Mosley. Great dude and great player. Hard for a LB to come back from a neck injury. I hope he works for the Jets. Asst LB coach or something.”
More commented: “Very consistent player, congrats on a great career.”
