Manny Pacquiao comeback could continue as undefeated champion eyes huge unification clash ...Middle East

Manny Pacquiao is being targeted by undefeated 147lbs champion Brian Norman Jr providing the legend wins his comeback fight.

Pacquiao could make history and become the oldest ever heavyweight world champion at the age of 43, when he takes on WBC king Mario Barrios on July 19.

‘Pac Man’ is an underdog in the contest, but could extend his return to the sport if he rolls back the years and picks up a victory against the odds.

Should he win, Pacquiao may look to extend his stay at 147lbs and could look for even bigger fights next.

One of those options could be talented WBO king Norman Jr, who will first defend his crown against Jin Sasaki in Japan.

And the American insists he will pursue a fight with Pacquiao should both holds the belts, and wants to send him into retirement.

Norman Jr told The Ring: “Actually, that’s, real deal, the main fight I want simply because of that WBC belt.

“And if Pacquiao win it, that makes it even better because that’s a legend in the game. That WBC belt is actually my main goal.

“I was very surprised [he chose to come back]. He’s 46 years old, but I know for a fact it’s very, very hard to sleep that competitive nature in you.

“Just a few years ago, he beat the man, ‘One Time’ Keith Thurman. So, I’m pretty sure he’s like, ‘I know I got at least a little bit more left.’

“I understand where he’s coming from, but if I get that opportunity, respectfully, I gotta retire him like he did with Oscar De La Hoya.”

Pacquiao handed De La Hoya his final bow in the ring in 2008, inflicting a brutal stoppage on the ageing legend.

And Norman Jr is hoping to get the opportunity to do the same, providing Barrios doesn’t beat him too it.

The boxing fraternity have expressed their concern over Pacquiao’s return given his age.

The Filipino icon was beaten by Yordenis Ugas in his last fight, looking a shadow of himself in a contest which was five years ago in 2020.

And last year, he returned in an exhibition which saw him take a real beating against Japanese kickboxer Rukiya Anpo.

Despite fears, Pacquiao is in training and has already faced off with his far bigger opponent Barrios as full steam rolls ahead.

And he believes that fans will see the best version of him in the ring despite his age.

He said: “I always stay in shape, but once I started seriously working out again, I realized that I still had that passion and ability in me.

“I went to my doctor and everything was perfect. My medicals came back great. I feel good, and I’m ready to do it again.

“For this camp, I’m back with my longtime trainer, Freddie Roach. The old Manny will be back.

“It’s one fight at a time. Once I get through this, we can talk about the next fight.”
