Few, if any, athletes in American sports have as much on their plate as Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. But through it all, he keeps football his top priority.
“Football is always going to be number 1,” he told the media on Wednesday, June 18, at the Chiefs’ mandatory minicamp practice. “I love this game. It’s still my childhood dream.”
Kelce, 35, considered retiring from the NFL in the offseason after a tough 2024 on the stat sheet and a blowout Super Bowl loss in February to the Philadelphia Eagles. Now that he’s ramping up for his 13th season in the league, he is reflecting on his decision to continue living his dream.
“When I really thought about it I think, this offseason, I got back to just wanting to really focus on this game and getting the most out of this game as I possibly can,” he said. “This will always be number 1 in terms of my business world and my career path.”

Outside of football, Kelce cohosts the popular “New Heights” podcast with his brother, Jason Kelce. He has also tried his hand in entertainment, appearing on Ryan Murphy’s Grotesquerie, executive producing the 2023 movie My Dead Friend Zoe and hosting the Prime Video series, Are You Smarter Than A Celebrity?. He also has a wide portfolio of business investments, his own charities and various endorsements.
And that’s before starting what he’s now best known for: being the boyfriend of Taylor Swift.
Kelce summed up the work-life balance by saying that no matter the opportunity in front of him, he needs to remain “accountable for the people I agree to team up with.”
On the football field, Kelce said he just didn’t feel like his career was over.

“I didn’t feel like it was my last game,” he said of the Super Bowl. “I feel like I have a lot more to prove and I have so much fun coming into the building.”
With the regular season still months away, the Chiefs are on the short list of teams expected to contend for a championship in the 2025-26 season. Kelce has already won three titles with Kansas City, and the future Hall of Famer won’t accept anything less than a fourth.
“That’s the only way I determine whether [the season is] a success or not,” he said. ”It’s how I’m wired now. Early on in my career I would set those goals for myself and I just think it’s more of a genuine feeling and the right mentality to go out there and try to make the right play for my team.”
The Chiefs will open the 2025 preseason on Saturday, August 9, on the road against the Arizona Cardinals.
