DENVER (KDVR) — Interstate 70 was closed eastbound near Eagle for a wildland fire, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Eagle County Sheriff's Office.

The fire had prompted evacuation orders for the areas of Red Canyon and Horn Ranch, north of the interstate from approximately milepost 151 to milepost 154, according to the sheriff's office. The area is immediately adjacent to the fire, according to officials.

Power lines in the area had been de-energized, and a Type 1 helicopter was on scene of the fire as of 5:45 p.m. The Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit said that the fire was estimated to be about 10 acres in size and "quickly advancing."

The sheriff's office said that the fire had sparked near milepost 154, near Wolcott, and that heavy smoke from the fire was visible. At this point, the fire is being called the Red Canyon Fire.

The first responders asked the public to avoid the area for their safety and to allow the emergency crews to work.

The Colorado State Patrol said that westbound I-70 was closed at milepost 157 and eastbound was closed at milepost 147. Motorists were being detoured onto Highway 6, and CSP said it did not know when the roadway would reopen.

Motorists should expect delays and seek alternate routes.

As of Tuesday, Eagle County was under extreme fire danger, according to the Eagle Valley Wildland Fire Protection Service. The agency said that the area is seeing low snowpack and hot and dry weather, causing a high risk of a wildfire.

The area was not under fire restrictions, but the agency cautioned residents to avoid sparks and open flames, to be careful with equipment and vehicles and to report all smoke and fires immediately.

The area could see red flag conditions later this week.
